The dance classes at Apollo Swing are open to people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience. Our instructors are excited to share their passion for jazz dance with anyone willing to listen; our classes are relaxed, inclusive, social, and just a lot of fun! Different styles of dancing and approaches to teaching are celebrated and embraced here at Apollo: swing dances are social dances, defined by improvisation and freedom of expression. Diversity, creativity, and community are at the heart of what jazz dance is all about, and our mission here at Apollo Swing!

Level 1

Wanna get your feet hot? Wanna learn how to dance to fast swing music with ease? Come get your shag on with us! Collegiate Shag is an energetic partner dance, with its roots in the Afro-American dance cultures of the 1920's and 1930's. It is usually danced to fast swing jazz music (180-250 bpm... and up) and is often recognised by its fast kicks and smiling faces! New to swing dances? No problem! We will start from the basics and build up from there. Already experienced in another swing style? Also great! We'll teach you how to use this style to navigate the faster tempos with ease, while spending less and less energy as you progress. This class is intended as a beginner level entry to Collegiate Shag, and the contents will evolve according to the level of the participants. Each class is 1,5 hours and will consist of an hour of new material, and half an hour of guided practice time. During the practice time you can practice the new moves, dance with each other and with the teachers, and get personalised tips and feedback from the teachers.
