Sven Van houcke
Sven made his first dance moves as a teenager with Slow waltz, quickstep, jive, disco swing. As a young adult, he stopped dancing because judo, paragliding, canyoning and taking care of his family took up all of his free time. But blood is thicker than water: a few years ago, he again felt dancing butterflies in his stomach. Together with his partner Elke he discovered the pleasures of Lindy Hop and attended several schools to improve his skills. Nowadays not a single day passes without him being busy with Lindy Hop. The social dance floor is his habitat. Sven likes nothing better than passing his passion for Lindy Hop to others.
Geneviève Vermylen is one of the founders of Apollo Swing who started in 1996 and is the owner of Apollo Hop.
It is the passion of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s which naturally put Lindy Hop on her path. She discovered the Lindy Hop at Herrang Dance Camp and has been trained and inspired abroad by top international teachers. Her goal was to see a full dancefloor of swing dancers from all ages having fun on Swing Bands in Belgium; this goal has been reached in more ways than one as the virus of Lindy is amongst us! Geneviève is head of the organization of the International workshop « Crazy Swing Camp» since 2001 where they host the best TOP dancers in the world.
It all started with a fifties Fiat 500, since then she lives a life of vintage passion: from clothing to hairstyling, furniture and music. So it wasn’t long until Verdiana discovered the Lindy drug during her work as a vintage hairdresser for Radio Modern. Once she got the bounce in her bones, her life changed completely. You can regularly see her popping up at social dances in Belgium and attending international dance camps and workshops, catching the eyes of the innocent bystanders with her Italian style lindy moves. When it comes to swing dancing, for Verdiana it’s all about having fun and moving your body to the music. Musicality is the key for two individuals to become one on the dance floor.
Anton Potocnik (Shag)
Since early days Anton (originally from Slovenija) was interested in the art of body movement. He especially enjoyed dancing where a combination of movement, music and interaction with a partner offered him the ultimate challenge. After many years of dancing salsa, Anton moved to Zurich where he met swing dancers and immediately fell in love with Lindy hop. Never before he realized how much fun dancing can be. His latest obsession is Collegiate Shag where no song is fast enough for him. Fast kicks, mindless thinking and energetic music is what keeps him on a dance floor until the very last song. Anton draws his inspiration from Steven and Chanzie and a number of other incredible international teachers.
Leen De Kort
Leen has been dancing on and off since childhood, but when she discovered Lindy hop, she knew it was there to stay. On her numerous travels she explored many swing communities and meet excellent dancers. All this greatly enriched her dancing style. When living in Vienna she discovered Balboa and found a passion in Collegiate Shag. Her mission is to bring this fun, lighthearted high-tempo dance to Belgium’s swing scene.
This level is meant for those who are absolutely new to lindy hop and are about to learn the dance’s first basic steps. You don’t need any previous dance experience.
You will learn the charleston, triple steps, groove walks, kick steps on basic patterns like send-out, tuck-turn, change places, circle, etc…
You will learn how to lead or follow these different patterns.
The main focus of this course is to discover and dance the Lindy Hop and allow you to go to social dances and have fun!
This level is for experienced dancers. You will be invited by your teacher to join this level. For first-timers at Apollo Hop, please check with our teachers if you can participate at this level.
This level is for people with a several years experience. You participate in national and/or international workshops and are a regular at the social dances and parties.
In this course we will focus on giving your dance more flavour by focussing on techniques that will make you more in control of your movements, give it more dynamic, adapted to the music, improvising with your partner. Of course we need to go back to the basics to be able to do that!
We believe that students who join this level are confident, technically knowledgeable and fairly fluent in the rhythmical language around the dance form. The material in circulation on this level will be challenging from all aspects: rhythmically, technically and tempo.
This group includes dancers that are very comfortable on the social dance floor.
You’ve mastered the basic charleston, triple steps, groove walks, kick steps on basic patterns like send-out, tuck-turn, change places, circle, and know the difference between dancing in a 6 and an 8 count.
During this course we will expand your vocabulary with new moves, teach several variations on moves you already know, help you improve the basics, such as the bounce, and work on your technique and connection.
You have follow +/- 1 year of weekly classes with Apollo Hop.
If the collegiate shag basic is already in your body and you don’t have to think about it, then it is time to spice things up. In the beginner/intermediate level we will add more basic steps, more breaks and more kicks. Yes, it’s time for the double-kick! Join us and learn famous moves such as sliding-doors, Groovy-movie pass, double kicks, cross kicks and more. After this course you will easily fill any fast song on a social floor with your awesome new moves.
We hope to inspire you to get on your toes, tap the beat and enjoy the social dancing even more with quick steps of Collegiate Shag.
