Marie-Anne Standaert

Marie-Anne started playing bugle at 11 years old in her home town brass band. She is the only one of her family to play an instrument, and she soon feels that her passion for music will become her profession. She studies bugle and piano at the Eeklo Music Academy and later, after having opted for other studies, she enters the Brussels Royal Conservatory to learn the trumpet and jazz, with, amongst others, Richard Rousselet, Laurent Blondiau and Manu Mellaerts as teachers.

Marie-Anne plays the trumpet in several groups. Jazz, in its wider sense, is her main passion, but she opens up to other styless such as pop-rock, world music, Latino, funk… as long as there is groove, melody and emotion. She presently directs her own swing quintet : The Hop Sh Bam Connection, her own jazz trio with original compositions: Misstriohso, as well as her own big band: T movement. She also plays in the Jamaican Jazz Orchestra and in Derek’s band, a composer and songwriter who surrounds himself with jazz musicians. Marie-Anne has previously played in The Rhythm Junks (Steven De Bruin), Zulemax, The West Music Club, Monkey Business, and of course with the Special Quintet with Richard Rousselet. After a break with the latter, Marie-Anne is now ready to embrace a new challenge: The New Special Quintet who proposes dreamlike rhythmic accompaniment! In addition to her involvement as a trumpet player, she teaches jazz (brass, ensemble, big band and music reading at the Academy of Ghent and at the Courtrai and Lille Conservatories.
